“Do you still love me?”
I asked her that….after all these years and all the things I said and did to harden myself against what we had and what we lost.
She stared at me. She has that way of looking at you with those impossibly deep brown eyes. That’s what got me long ago.
“Yes, Chris. I always will.”
And then we said nothing.
A divorce. Many years. It came down to this…..I looked down at my hotel restaurant chicken. It was too late to go anywhere decent. Marriott chicken and soul bearing. I would have laughed if I could.
I thought about the shoot we had done earlier and the beautiful images of her, my ex-wife, my “soulmate” (if there was such a thing), that awaited editing.
I thought about the past.
Dangerous.
Dragons.
Mine and hers.
“I love you.” I said. Everything is my head was yelling at me.
“I know. That won’t change.” She smiled.
“Nope.” I said.
The waitress came then and I ordered another Gin and Tonic.
She was still smiling at me: honest, engaged, warm.
I held onto that. I didn’t want the feeling to end.
